Romana Kryzanowska

Romana Kryzanowska, a professional ballet dancer awaiting surgery for an ankle injury, subjected herself to an intensive training programme with Joseph Pilates on advice by George Balanchine. She returned to her dance training after only a few sessions with J. Pilates, feeling physically stronger and working with more control. Having avoided surgery she had therefore been able to personally verify the effectiveness of the method. After several years of daily training she was invited by J. Pilates to join him as a teacher.
Their partnership was to last for almost thirty years. Profoundly intelligent, sensitive and a true professional, Romana gained Joseph’s respect and confidence and was subsequently entrusted with the task of spreading his life’s work, respecting the authenticity of the method as the only way to ensure its benefits.
Prior to passing away in October 2013 she had been a Master Instructor at the True Pilates studio in New York where the method could (and can) be learnt in the way Joseph had conceived it. With conscientiousness and commitment Romana handed down to her students not only a profound knowledge of the method, but also the spirit of the discipline, the passion for the work and ultimately also the respect for her brilliant predecessor who had dedicated his life to the well-being of others.
